DBT Family Skills Group
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a serious mental health problem believed to affect approximately 1.6 percent of the population. Individuals with BPD experience intense emotional turmoil, often have difficulties with relationships, and are at risk for suicidal and self-harming behaviour.
The core of all these skills is mindfulness. Learning mindfulness can increase one’s own awareness of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and how they show up in our relationships with our loved ones. Experiencing feelings of anger, regret and anxiety are common for concerned family members. DBT skills can improve coping, allowing people to continue to participate in life fully. Over the course of the skills group there will be an opportunity for group members to share their experiences and support each other. Experiencing mental health in a family system is common and can illicit feelings of shame. Hearing alike stories and experiences can normalize the fact that other families are dealing with similar issues.
